Things to keep in mind post Bone Marrow transplant

A bone marrow transplant is a medical procedure performed to replace bone marrow that has been damaged or destroyed by disease, infection, or chemotherapy. This procedure involves transplanting blood stem cells, which travel to the bone marrow where they produce new blood cells and promote growth of new marrow.
It has boosted survival rates from nearly zero to more than 85 percent for some blood cancers.
When the new stem cells enter your body, they begin to travel through your body and to your bone marrow. In time, they multiply and begin to make new, healthy blood cells. After your bone marrow transplant, your immune system is weak and you are at risk for infection. Even though your white blood cell count might be “normal,” your immune system is still recovering. Therefore, infections might still occur. So it’s a very critical stage and certain precautions and a lot of care is required during this phase.
Some of preventive measures that is must after transplant are-

1.Pay close attention to hygiene
Daily cleansing with soap and water is the first line of defense against bacteria on the skin.To help minimize infection and gum bleeding, daily oral (mouth) care is necessary.

2. Prevent infections transmitted by direct contact
Thorough hand washing is crucial, especially during the first 6 months after your BMT.Wash your hands with antimicrobial (antibacterial) soap and warm water.

-Before eating.
-Before and after preparing food.
-After touching pets or animals.
-After sneezing, coughing, or blowing your nose.
-After going outdoors.
-Before and after any central venous catheter care or intravenous infusions.
-Before taking oral medicines.
-After touching soiled linens or clothes.

3.Prevent infections transmitted by direct contact and respiratory transmission
Avoid gardening, mulching, raking, mowing, farming, or direct contact with soil and plants.
Avoid crowded areas where you are unable to control the distance between you and others (such as at movie theaters or sporting events)

4.Prevent pet-transmitted infections
It is not necessary to part with your pets. However, it is important to minimize direct contact with animals, especially animals that are ill. Please delegate the care of your pets to other family members or friends.

After your bone marrow transplant, you may make exercise and physical activity a regular part of your life to continue to improve your health and fitness. Exercising regularly helps you control your weight, strengthen your bones, increase your endurance, strengthen your muscles and keep your heart healthy.

Thus, post-transplant phase is as important as per transplant stage. Healthy lifestyle and precautionary steps will help the patients to recover quickly. Follow the norm to return to your form!
